Our Mission
HealthPlanCalc exists because understanding health insurance costs should not require a finance degree or an insurance broker. Millions of Americans face open enrollment every year without a clear picture of what they will actually pay — leading to poor plan choices, missed subsidies, and unnecessary financial stress.
Our free estimator uses publicly available Federal Poverty Level data published annually by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and average ACA marketplace premium benchmarks from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to give you a realistic starting point before you visit Healthcare.gov to compare and enroll in actual coverage. We cover Bronze, Silver, and Gold plan tiers, and estimate Premium Tax Credit and Cost-Sharing Reduction eligibility based on your specific household size and income.
What HealthPlanCalc Does
Our free health insurance cost estimator provides:
- Estimated monthly premiums for Bronze, Silver, and Gold ACA plans based on your age and state using national average benchmark data.
- Estimated Premium Tax Credit eligibility based on your household size and income relative to the 2026 Federal Poverty Level.
- Identification of potential Cost-Sharing Reduction eligibility for Silver plan enrollees at 100–250% FPL.
- Flags for potential Medicaid eligibility for very low-income households who may qualify for free or near-free coverage.
- Clear next steps directing you to Healthcare.gov for actual plan options, enrollment, and official subsidy calculations.
We want to be completely clear about what we are not. HealthPlanCalc is not an insurance company, insurance broker, or government agency. We do not sell insurance, provide official quotes, or enroll you in coverage. We are not affiliated with Healthcare.gov or any state marketplace.
How Our Estimates Are Calculated
Our estimates are built on four publicly available data sources:
Published annually by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. We update these figures each January when new guidelines are released.
Based on CMS national marketplace average data for each age group. Local premiums vary significantly from these national averages.
Based on IRS contribution percentage guidelines for calculating subsidy amounts under the Affordable Care Act.
Based on ACA rating rules that permit insurers to charge up to 3× more for older adults compared to younger enrollees.
We update all data sources every January. Estimates reflect national averages and will differ from actual plan costs in your specific area. Always verify on Healthcare.gov before making enrollment decisions.

Our Commitment to Accuracy
Health insurance rules change every year. We review and update our Federal Poverty Level figures, premium benchmarks, ACA contribution percentages, and plan data every January to reflect the most current publicly available information. However, health insurance markets are local — actual plan costs in your county may differ significantly from the national averages we use in our estimates. Always verify specific plan costs and subsidy amounts on Healthcare.gov before making any enrollment decision.
If you find an error in our estimates or data, please contact us at info@freeonlinecalcs.com. We take accuracy seriously and correct errors promptly.
